Doctors of the Church: St. Bede the Venerable
Saint Bede, the Venerable was born around 672-673 A.D. in Jarrow, England. At seven, he was entrusted to the Monastery of Saint Peter at Wearmouth and later moved to the Monastery of Saint Paul in Jarrow, where he spent his entire life. Bede dedicated his 56 years to prayer, study, teaching, and writing, becoming a renowned Benedictine monk and scholar.
His most famous work, The Ecclesiastical History of the English People, was read publicly in churches. Bede also wrote on philosophy, astronomy, history, and scripture. Even on his deathbed, he completed his last work, praising the Holy Trinity before passing.
Though no miracles were attributed to Bede in life, many were linked to his relics after his death. Canonized in 1899, Bede’s scholarly legacy and sanctity earned him the title "Venerable," and his spirit continues to inspire San Beda University.
